Maps are an essential tool to navigate the world. Their availability and maintenance was long subject to large publishing houses. This changed when the OpenStreetmap project emerged in 2004.
In this talk, I will explain how the OpenStreetmap project came into being, what the advantages and disadvantages are in comparison to other, commercial solutions, and how to contribute to the project. I will also elaborate on how the content of the database can be used to enable empowering project such as WheelMap.
