Wild fisheries are the key driver of biodiversity loss at sea and considered to be the greatest anthropogenic impact on the world‘s marine ecosystems. Yet not all marine fisheries contribute equally. Here we will look at the threefold threat that bottom trawl fisheries pose to the resilience of marine ecosystems and the climate: biodiversity loss, seafloor integrity and its potential for carbon storage and fuel consumption.
