In this presentation, Saud al-Zaid and Melanie Bonajo approach the so-called refugee and migrant crisis from two radically different scales. From the macro scale —geopolitical, official, and institutional— they will discuss the influence of Frontex and EU policy on the non-European states on the other side of the Mediterranean. And from the micro scale —intimate, emotional, and physical— what happens when humans perceive other bodies as alien, foreign and unwelcome.
We approach the so-called migrant crisis from two radically different scales. From the macro scale—geopolitical, official, and institutional—we discuss the influence of EU policy on non-European states on the other side of the Mediterranean. And from the micro scale—intimate, emotional, and physical—what happens when humans perceive others as alien, foreign and unwelcome. What alternatives should hedonists around the world support? We advocate for systems of caring and mutual assistance instead of greed and suspicion, ultimately respecting bodies and breaking borders, going from Frontex to Latex.
