This talk gives an informal overview of recent research on language structure, and how it supports interactive communication — specifically, how grammar systems balance demands on speakers and listeners need to put into communication.

We then discuss the implications: how this shows language as fundamentally social, and how modern AI (i.e. Large Language Models, or LLMs) fails to capture this at a technical level. What does this mean for our collective communicative future?
