An agro-food system with sustainable agriculture, protected ecosystems, good farming livelihoods, without hunger and malnutrition, and all within planetary boundaries. In a recent study, we derived a science-based outlook how such a food system could look like, and what it needs to get there.
Our global agro-food system is not on track. One third of global greenhouse gas emissions comes from the agro-food system, nitrogen pollution and deforestation are progressing, while livelihoods in agriculture are often fragile, hunger and unhealthy overnutrition coexist, and food price inflation is a major problem for the stability of societies.
Based on insights from our recent study (https://www.nature.com/articles/s43016-025-01268-y), I want to give an outlook how a sustainable agro-food system could look like and discuss with you how we get there.
