War of Narratives

In this lecture, we want to discuss anti-Palestinian racism and repression, as well as the criminalization of solidarity with Palestine in the German context. We will explore how anti-Palestinian racism manifests itself not only in media and in public discourse, but also through political instruments of oppression and through everyday practices of discrimination.

We will shed light on the latest ban of demonstrations, as not only an ongoing and structural attempt to eliminate the social, political and communal existence of Palestinians in Germany. But we also want to deconstruct the designation of certain minoritized groups as "highly emotionalized", as serving a racist stereotype that devalues Palestinians, Muslims and people of the Lebanese, Turkish and Syrian diasporas as a collective and denies them their ability to act "rationally". Arriving to Germany in late 2014, Abu Hajar will reflect on a narrative that was constructed by his experience within the Syrian leftist movements. His first encounters in Germany evoked the concept of epistemic violence as described in Franz Fanon writings. He will discuss the aftermath of his decision to culturally boycott Israel within the framework of this concept.
