‘’How do you enjoy sex’? Is a question that is rarely asked in the existing sex education. In order to enjoy sex, you need to know what you and your partner need to feel aroused. And, you need to be able to communicate what you do and don't want. Lack of knowledge about one’s own body and about how sex works, and myths and ideas about what is normal often stand in the way of sexual pleasure. Ellen Laan’s research on the orgasm gap and her influence on the dutch sex education will be presented.
I am Dide de Jongh, the sister of Ayla de Jongh. Ellen Laan, a Professor of biopsychosocial determinants of sexual health in The Netherlands, worked very hard to eliminate inequalities and improve the education about sex in The Netherlands. For example, she put the orgasm gap (meaning that in heterosexual sex men almost always have an orgasm and woman very often not) on the map. She emphasized that in order to have good sex, both woman and men must have an erection. In addition, she ensured that the clitoris is represented in all the high school biology books in the Netherlands. Ellen Laan’s groundbreaking research on how woman experience sex is known worldwide. She is one of my biggest role models. Unfortunately, Ellen passed away the 22 of January 2022. In my lecture I am going to talk about the lessons she taught me, because they cannot be repeated often enough.
I am Dide de Jongh, a 25 years old PhD student at the Erasmus Medical centre in The Netherlands, in the field of Medical ethics. At the congress I will give a talk about the lessons professor Ellen Laan taught me on how woman experience sex.
